The pattern is universal: side bets sell excitement at a fixed markup. Nothing about your skill, your streak or your “feel” changes these numbers — they are burned into the deck composition. If the entertainment is worth the price to you, that is a legitimate choice; just make it knowing the price. The main game rewards skill; the side bets tax it.
Why the edges are so much bigger
Side bets pay long odds on rare events, and long odds hide big margins: shaving a 30:1 payout to 25:1 looks minor but moves percentage points of edge — which is exactly how paytables differ between casinos offering “the same” bet.
